Repairing Damaged Merchandise: A Rejoinder

Our goal in writ ing “Dam aged Mer chan dise?” (DM) was not to have the last word on the sub ject but to raise an aware ness within the hu man–com puter in ter ac tion (HCI) com mu nity of is sues that we felt had been too long ig nored or ne glected. On read ing the 10 com men tar ies from dis tin guished mem bers of the HCI com mu nity, we were pleased to see that they had joined the de bate and broad ened the dis cus sion. Sub se quently, we were some what torn by how to pro ceed. Our first thought was to re spond point by point, com men tary by com men tary. How ever, we re frain from ad dress ing many spe cific is sues here, as a full dis cus sion would in volve an ar ti cle at least as long as DM. In stead we fo cus on a few im por tant themes that emerged through out our ar ti cle and the en su ing dis cus sion:
